Be Patient for Impatients

Here at LCGC we believe that until a plant is ready to be planted we won’t sell it! That has been the case with impatients and veggies this year.

Since our weather has changed over the years it seems to stay hotter longer in the fall than previous years. It’s because of that reason we should wait until a more permanent weather change is imminent before selling cooler weathered flowers, plants, and veggies.

Almost 20 years ago Black Olive East and Living Color Garden Center began the price wars on 4.5″ impatients at .59 cents each. Before you knew it we started a campaign that even the big box boys (home depot) jumped on it!

Currently in the big box operations you can find almost anything on the shelves and ready for your home…..but before you go buying crazy you should know that even though some items are for sell it doesn’t necessarily mean they will thrive right now.

If you have doubt about the survival of your seasonal flowers, herbs or veggies just buy a few of them and test them first before making a big investment in plants that may fail the fall.

Again I stress the design of potted gardens for many of your herbs and seasonal flowers. It gives you patio garden a homey look and cozy welcome to your guest.

When planting your impatients this years here’s a DiG iT TiP to give you great success!

DiG iT TiP: when planting your impatients only plant ¾ of the root ball in the ground. This will ensure the plant does not rot and dissolve as you may have seen happen before.
I always add a ½ scoop of Osmocote time release to each plant at the root ball. It makes all the difference in the size, the flowering, and the longevity of the plant.

Good Luck and Get Dirty Gardening,

Planning to spruce the ole castle called home? Well with today’s economy in question, many home owners are taking a second look at their biggest investment and starting to realize that it’s been neglected over the years. Many of them are traveling less and spending more of their vacations at home. As a result of that, they find themselves caught up in a frenzy of home projects - indoors and out! So, to help you make the wise choices outside, I have prepared some TIPS that you should apply when investing money in your yard.

TIP #1  Measure the desired space to be landscaped.

TIP #2  Determine the direction N., S., E. or W.

TIP #3  Make sure that there are no utility or sprinkler lines in the proposed area that may get damaged.

TIP #4  Take a ride around your neighborhood and take notes and photos of landscapes or plants that inspire you.

TIP #5  Take photos of the area that you are planning transforming and take them with you when you go shopping.

TIP #6 GO SHOPPING!!

Head to your favorite garden center find yourself a  plant savvy sales person and give them all the information you’ve been able to collect so that he/she can assist you in selecting the right products for your project.

TIP #7  Make sure you tell the sales person what you are and are not committed to do as relates to gardening.

Give them as much information about your about your lifestyle as possible!  Example: we have 3 kids , 2 dogs, I am selling the property in 2 years, I travel 2 weeks out the month. etc. This will ensure that the professional selects the right design and plants products that suit your lifestyle!!

TIP #8  I would also advise you to plan with one sales person from start to finish.

When shopping in the future for your yard try to use that same salesperson, by this point  they have a clear understanding of your home and your vision and should be able to effectively advise you going forward.
